Can You Put a Sofa in a Skip?
Updated for 2023 new POP legislation.
The simple answer is NO as of January 2023. Recent legislation by the Government means that waste transfer stations are no longer allowed to process certain materials found in sofas as general mixed waste. This is due to POPs (Persistent Organic Materials) found in some of the materials. This has been introduced at very short notice and means that no skip companies are allowed to accept these materials using the current methods of disposal and instead they have to be incinerated to avoid harmful chemicals being released back into the environment.
o dispose of a sofa, it’s best to contact your local council. Yet, we here at Reliable Skip Hire in Camberley, understand that large, bulky items can be a pain to dispose of when you have decided you now must part with them and buy new ones. That’s why we have put together a simple guide to help you know what you can do with those pesky sofas.
How to Put Your Sofa in a Skip?
You are no longer able to put your sofa in one of our skips. At the end of the day, some of the materials that make up a sofa are hazardous to the environment. However, sofa’s are very large bulky items and can take up a lot of space, so often it’s more cost effective anyway to arrange a man with van service to dispose of them.
Our recommendation as of 2023 for the disposal of skips is to contact your local council or local tipping site. This way not only do you make your skip more cost-effective, but you can keep the skip for other rubbish. It makes your skip worth your money because it means you can fit more waste into it, you wouldn’t want to hire a skip just to fit one item into it.
Other Ways to Dispose of a Sofa
There are a fair few ways to get rid of an old sofa. Two of the main ways are selling it or donating it. So we’ve decided to give you some extra information to help you just in case you think you’re sofa isn’t ready for the landfill just yet.
There are many ways to sell your old sofa. You can go online to websites such as eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Gumtree to advertise the selling of your sofa. If doing this online doesn’t appeal to you there are also some more traditional methods such as advertising your sofa in the newspaper. Or you could simply just sell it to a friend or family.
If you’re feeling rather generous about your old sofa, you could donate it to various places. You could give it away to a family or friend without any money and donate it to them. You could also give it to lots of charities that operate in Camberley and other areas.
One charity in particular that operates in Camberley and specialises in taking big bits of furniture is the British Heart Foundation. There are various other shops in Farnborough, Aldershot and Basingstoke too which accept donations. This is a great place to donate your sofa and any other items of furniture. Not only are you getting rid of your sofa, but you’re also helping a charity and other people that are less fortunate to be able to get a sofa. This is not the only charity around that takes large pieces of furniture so you can always have a look around if there’s another charity you’d more interested in.
Although we’re more than happy with letting you put your sofa in one of our skips, there are some restrictions that you need to be aware of. We allow sofa’s in the skips because they contain no harsh chemicals and there’s no safety risk. However, that’s not the case with all items, and just so we can keep everyone, including yourself, safe we ask that you just take a quick read of our waste restrictions page before hiring a skip.
