Frequently Asked Questions
How long can I hire a skip for?
How long you can hire a skip for really depends on your location. We have different depots across the UK and in some areas we are able to offer 30 days hire inclusive in the price, whereas other areas this may be 7 to 14 days. The quickest way to find out is to simply enter your postcode here and view the sizes available in your local area. Underneath each size, you’ll see a maximum hire period. If you need your skip for longer than the quoted time, simply get in touch and request a quote for a longer skip rental period.
Are there any hidden costs?
Unlike many skip hire companies, we aim to be as transparent as possible with any potential additional costs you may incur. Many companies do not clearly list items which cannot be placed in a skip and instead just apply charges to prohibited items after the skip is collected – we make it clear through our Waste Restrictions page and Terms. To avoid any additional charges, simply ensure that the skip can be safely placed at your chosen location and ensure that access to it remains clear from the collection date until it is picked up, which during very busy periods could be a few days later.
If the driver arrives to collect your skip and the skip is not a safe level load (waste is not piled higher than the tallest sides of the skip), this will incur a wasted journey charge. It is important to note, almost every skip hire company in the country applies these charges due to the high costs of fuel, labour and also Environmental Agency restrictions.
If you’re unsure on any part of the skip hire process, please feel free to call us – we’ll happily advise you and if you’re unsure if a skip will fit on your driveway, advise that you send us your address and some photos before ordering, so we can get a better idea.
Will a skip damage my driveway?
It is unlikely that your driveway will be damaged by a skip. However, if your driveway has been laid with poor foundations, is worn out or has just been laid, then there is a risk that the driveway could sink or be damaged. As an example, an 8 yard skip can hold up to 8 tonnes of waste, which creates a lot of pressure in the area which the skip truck’s balancing struts are placed when it is picked up for collection. It’s important to note, that we are not liable for damage which occurs to driveways – our drivers have no way of identifying if a driveway can handle the weight and as such it is the responsibility of the customer ordering.
How can you help reduce risk of damage to your driveway?
You may wish to place chipboard/MDF down on your drive where you’d like the skip to be placed. This can help reduce scrapes. We don’t supply boards, however if you wish to use boards, please add to your order notes to place the skip on the boards. Although it may seem obvious that you’ve put down boards for this reason, the driver may assume that these boards are for other materials to be placed on if you’re having building work done at your house.
If you’re concerned about your driveway, the safest option would be to have the skip placed on the road outside – for this, we would need to apply for a skip permit for you. Please call us for a quote on a skip permit.
What can I put in a skip?
All of our skips are for General Mixed Waste, however we do offer different types of skips for certain materials. So what does General Mixed Waste include? This could be garden waste such as a mixture of soil, branches, old equipment such as BBQs (non electric!) and general household junk. It’s easier to note what cannot be placed in a skip which is available in our waste restrictions guide.
The most common items which customers do not realise cannot be placed in a skip include mattresses, electronic items (anything with a plug), tyres, plasterboard, upholstered furniture and fridge/freezers. Certain items can be accepted for an additional fee – please contact us for a quote. These restrictions are in place due to strict Environmental Agency Laws and apply to all skip companies, not just us!
Where can I place a skip?
The most common place we put skips is on customer driveways. They can also be placed on your front lawn (provided the whole vehicle does not need to drive onto the lawn). There needs to be suitable space for the skip lorry to be able to reverse into your driveway and then unload the skip. If you haven’t seen a skip being unloaded before, the simplest way to describe it is like a crane – two big lorry arms extend backwards with the skip attached by chains.
Don’t have a driveway? No problem – in certain circumstances, we can place the skip in a car park or public road. This requires permission from the landowner and if it’s a public parking space or on a road, it will require a parking bay suspension and a skip permit. These are an additional cost and can take 5+ days to process by the local council. If you require a permit, it is not possible to order these yourself, they must be done by the skip company. Please contact us before hiring a skip and we’ll advise of the costs and acquire the permit on your behalf.
Can I place a skip on a public road?
Yes you can put a skip on a public road, but it must be on a road which does not have any restrictions such as double yellow lines or in a position which may be dangerous or cause an obstruction. Depending on which council your area covers, there may be restrictions on the size of the skip. If you intend to put a skip on the road, keep in mind that it can sometimes take 5-7 working days for a permit to be granted. The cost for a permit varies depending on the council and can range from £55 to £100+VAT per week.
If the place which you require the skip to be placed is in a parking bay for example, we will also need to obtain a parking bay suspension for you too.
Which areas do you cover?
We are a national skip hire company and cover 95% of postcodes across the UK. This includes all counties across the UK.
How do I book a skip?
Booking a skip is quick and easy. Simply enter your postcode at the top of this page and you’ll then see the different prices and sizes available. Do you offer discounts?
Our business model is based on high volume and low margin, making our skip hire service the best value in the UK. We don’t believe you should have to setup an account to benefit from great value! We offer these competitive prices whilst remaining environmentally conscious.
We currently offer an online discount of £20 when you book online – this is the lowest price we can offer. This offer isn’t available if you’re booking via the telephone or via invoice. We constantly check prices across each area to ensure that we are offering the best value possible.
Are there any restrictions?
Whilst all of our skips are general mixed waste, we do have some restrictions. These restrictions typically apply to all skip companies, not just us! Whilst some may seem slightly odd, it’s usually because of restrictions in place by the Government’s Environment Agency. Restrictions include mattresses, electronic items, upholstered furniture (except in some areas), plasterboard, fridges/freezers and hazardous materials such as Asbestos. More information on waste restrictions can be found here.
